Before reading the essay for the first time, you know that you have two main tasks. Ethics Profits? As you read the passage, you’ll need to. 1. figure out Booker T. Washington’s point of view, and. Revolutionary Essays? 2. identify the film essay rhetorical strategies he uses. By the way, almost all AP English Language and Composition Exams require that you identify or analyze rhetorical strategies, so it is essential that you spend a lot of time studying Chapters 9 through 11 , which are devoted to rhetorical strategies. The second time you read the prompt, you should circle clues or key elements that you know or need to figure out. Essays? For example, for this question, you should circle Booker T. Washington’s name.

Hopefully you know that he was a famous African American leader and scholar of the nineteenth century; many public schools in the United States are named after him. If you do not know that, then you would have to glean the information from the text. “Most famous” is another clue; this implies that this person gave several famous speeches, and this tells you something important about Booker T. Washington if you do not know about his fame to de droit constitutionnel, begin with. You should also note the date of the speech, for it gives a clue about the speech’s historical context, which will be important. Washington delivered the revolutionary speech in the South (Atlanta, Georgia) just 30 years after the Civil War. Finally, the audience is important. Sujet De Dissertation Constitutionnel? It is easy to guess that the attendees of the Exposition were mostly white, and this is revolutionary essays confirmed early in profits essays, the reading passage—which you are ready to read. What is Washington’s point of essays, view? Is he an angry man demanding change? Is he an outraged man warning of film review essay, rebellion?

Is he a timid man begging indulgence? No, he is none of these. Booker T. Washington’s point of view is that of the inspirational Southern preacher who urges blacks and revolutionary, whites to rally round the same economic flag. He employs three principal rhetorical strategies in this part of his speech. 1. Throughout, there is an film review essay, appeal to sentiment; this is particularly noteworthy in the first paragraph. 2. Revolutionary Essays? Next, there is the central image of the bucket, which could be considered part of either an extended metaphor or an allegory; this is first addressed to the black population, then to white people. Get Creative With Different Styles? 3. Finally, to support the imagery, Washington uses analogy (e.g., “there is as much dignity in tilling a field as in writing a poem”), scare tactics (e.g., the references to people of foreign birth), and interesting deductive reasoning.

Washington purports that the continual loyalty and hard work of blacks in essays, the past proves that they will be loyal, hard-working collaborators in the future. Foula Bressay? While the revolutionary essays claim is review essay reasonable, the revolutionary essays logic is not; in the past that Washington is talking about, the pro and con on uniforms essays blacks were slaves. For the most part, they had no choice but to revolutionary essays, be hard-working and loyal. Now, keep all the above information in mind as you read the ethics essays following sample essay, which was written in 40 minutes under actual test conditions. Born into slavery and liberated by the Emancipation Proclamation, Booker T. Washington is widely regarded as one of the most influential African American figures in the history of the United States.

In 1881, he started the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute, and soon became recognized, admired, and respected for his wisdom. Because a number of well-placed business leaders and political figures turned to him for advice, he delivered his most famous speech “The Atlanta Compromise Address” in 1895. It is an explication of his beliefs that his fellow African Americans and other former slaves should make the best of what they have and strive to excel in the positions and jobs they already occupy rather than continually fighting for something. Furthermore, he argues that the people of the white race also do not see what they have around them. A moving speech, the impact of the “Atlanta Compromise” was so powerful partially because of Washington’s skill as an orator and partially because of his strong rhetorical strategies of appeal to essays, ethos, allegory, and repetition, and style and essay, tone. One of the most memorable quotes from the “Atlanta Compromise” is “cast down your buckets where you are.” In this short allegory about a lost ship without drinking water being found by another ship and saved by using what was around them, Washington conveys his central idea that African Americans can help themselves and revolutionary, save themselves by using what resources they already have. The Great Wall? The lost ship, in thinking that it is surrounded by salty water, does not even attempt to try the revolutionary essays water before the second ship suggests the idea. Similarly, Washington implies that simply because they do not think they have anything to work with, the African Americans who were once slaves do not try to see what can be done with what they have. The impact of the allegory of the two ships is whalsay strengthened by Washington’s repetition of the phrase “cast down your bucket where you are.” However, in repeating it, he applies it to not only the African Americans, but also to revolutionary essays, “those of the pro and white race.” In that context, he states that the white Americans could look to the African Americans for help with the “prosperity of the essays South” instead of looking to “those of foreign birth and strange tongue and habits.” Again, he implores both sides to look around and make use of what is already present. The idea of the speech is set up in the introductory paragraph, wherein Washington states that the recognition of the race of the “American Negro” at the Exposition will do much to “cement the bressay whalsay friendship of the two races.” It is in this paragraph and these phrases that Washington turns to essays, the strategy of an appeal to ethos.

By asserting that the Exposition will help further the friendship between the con on school white Americans and essays, the African Americans, he subtly suggests that this end, this friendship, is what the organizers of the exposition should want (a moral want). This appeal is utilized again in the final paragraph of the passage. In asking the white Americans to get creative different styles, cast down their buckets, Washington also asks them to remember that the African Americans “have proved [their] loyalty to [the white Americans] in the past.” Thus, he seems to be saying it would be immoral for the white Americans to revolutionary, turn away from proved loyalty when they are in search of help and employees. However, the most compelling element of Washington’s speech is his tone and style. When reading the passage, one can almost imagine Washington delivering his oration. His tone and style are uplifting, optimistic, and emphatic, much like the tone of a passionate Southern preacher. His own emotions seem to be invested in every word. With phrases like “it is at the bottom of life that we must begin, and not at de droit constitutionnel the top,” or “there is as much dignity in tilling a field as in writing a poem,” Washington lends nobility and a right to pride to the common labor that most African Americans performed at the time.

When he speaks of revolutionary, casting down the bucket “in agriculture, in mechanics, in with essay styles, commerce, in domestic service, and in the professions,” he assures both the African Americans and the white Americans that hard labor is revolutionary not something to be looked down on. Neither, he implies, is the struggle to rise above your station a condemnable action. Nevertheless, he always comes back to the point that one must first make use of what is already present and readily available before searching for something else. A wise and powerful man and speaker, Booker T. Washington often knew just what to say to convey his ideas and opinions. Even more important, he knew how to phrase and present what was important. In “The Atlanta Compromise Address,” Washington successfully utilizes the strategies of appeal to review, ethos, repetition, allegory, style, and tone to impart his message of using what one had to revolutionary, improve oneself.

In simplified terms, “The Atlanta Compromise” is a speech based on carpe diem, the idea of seizing what one has and using it to one’s advantage. What do you think? This essay would probably earn a score of 7 or 8; it’s strong, but it isn’t as clear as it could be. Bressay Whalsay? It’s obvious from the outset that the student knows about Booker T. Washington and understands the historical context of the speech. The fact that both the introduction and the conclusion evince an attempt to go beyond the bare bones is probably what would make the reader lean toward the higher score. Revolutionary? However, there are two glaring problems in essay about of china, this essay. Revolutionary? Although one of them would probably not affect the score, it is an unnecessary and entirely avoidable error; it has to with styles, do with the five-paragraph form. The last sentence of the introduction announces a road map for the essay: “strategies of appeal to ethos [sentiment], allegory and repetition, and revolutionary, style and tone.” That’s fine. However, the student goes on ethics, to address the essays three examples in a different order: First the student addresses allegory and repetition, then discusses appeal to sentiment, and, finally, gets to style and tone. Luckily, most AP readers would overlook this, but it’s better to be safe than sorry—keep your organization consistent.

There is another problem that readers would probably not overlook. With Different Essay? Do you remember the two tasks that we set for our reading? One was to look for rhetorical strategies. The other was to establish a clear point of view. The student never addresses point of view in revolutionary essays, a coherent manner and in the only mention of it seems to confuse it with tone. Let’s look at another example of an analytical/expository essay, to get more practice. SAMPLE ESSAY #2—GIVING IT ANOTHER TRY. For this one, make sure you try writing the ethics profits essays essay on essays, your own by hand before you read the student essay—you should get as much practice as you can before test day. Set your timer for ethics, 40 minutes and begin.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND COMPOSITION. Total Time—2 hours. (Suggested time—40 minutes. Revolutionary Essays? This question counts as one-third of the total essay score.) In 1676, Madame de Sevigne wrote the letter below. Film Review? Read it carefully; then write an essay in which you identify the writer’s purpose and analyze how she uses language to achieve that purpose. Pay particular attention to organization, point of view, and diction. Write down the type of essay you’ll need to write, and describe your “job” in revolutionary, writing this essay. Next, circle the hints in the prompt. There isn’t much to circle, is there? There are only two items: the fact that the writer is a woman (Madame), and pro and, the historical context of the letter (seventeenth-century France under Louis XIV); if you know that “de” indicates nobility, then you have another clue to the point of view—the writer, indeed, belongs to the privileged nobility.

Here is the letter. List at least two, but no more than four, aspects of language that Madame de Sevigne’s uses to serve her purpose. By the revolutionary essays way, you are not expected to ascertain the “correct” purpose of the letter; the essay wall of china limited amount of revolutionary essays, text offered implies various points of view. Does Madame de Sevigne condemn the crime? Does she feel sorry for the criminal? The key is to point out that, above all else, the letter’s purpose is to relate an event. Beyond that, you would only be conjecturing. Here’s a sample essay by ethics essays the same student who wrote the previous one.

This time there is no doubt: The essay falls clearly into the 8 to 9 range. The student addresses the revolutionary difficult prompt well, follows the de dissertation de droit constitutionnel road map, provides relevant examples from the text, and supports it all with strong, organized writing. In the 1600s, life was by no means easy for women. They were expected to revolutionary, cater to any whim their husband might have, and they were treated like property. Whenever a woman outstepped the boundaries society had established for her, and her crime was serious enough, she was humiliated and punished publicly. In her 1676 letter, Madame de Sevigne writes of the Brinvilliers affair and incites questions regarding the treatment of women in her time. Society of the seventeenth century, especially the upper echelons of France, was mostly occupied with the scandalous doings of others in their class.

Each affair was picked apart, discussed, and passed from ear to eager ear. Naturally, details tended to be embellished and exaggerated, and essay about the great wall, each individual’s opinions and emotions wormed their way into the retelling. In her description of the Brinvilliers affair, Madame de Sevigne includes many of her own feelings upon essays, witnessing and hearing of the essay fiasco. Watching the Marquise de Brinvilliers’ be taken from Notre Dame to the scaffold, Sevigne declares that “the sight of [the Marquise] struck [her] with horror.” Expressing her condemnation of the criminal, Sevigne writes that “it seems that some say [the Marquise] was a saint,” implying that Sevigne herself does not share in that opinion. Revolutionary Essays? The Marquise’s life story affected Madame de Sevigne in such a way that she shuddered. Further evidence of essay about the great wall, Sevigne disdain is evident in her hope that the Marquise’s “murderous instincts” will not be inhaled by the people along with her ashes. Nevertheless, a certain reluctant admiration is evident in Sevigne’s declaration that the Marquise “died as she had lived, resolutely, and without fear or emotion.” Despite the Marquise’s transgressions, one must respect a woman who displayed such strength in the face of the revolutionary essays poor treatment they received from men, society, and get creative with different, even other women. Though she has included some personal sentiments and observations, the majority of Sevigne’s letter is dedicated to a fairly objective account of the revolutionary proceedings of the Brinvilliers affair.

She begins by explaining how the entire affair began—“The Marquis […] poisoned her father, brothers […] one of her children,” and her husband because she believed that “Sainte Croix would marry her if she were free.” Tracked to England by Degrais and arrested in Liege, the Marquise was brought back to France and sentenced. Her punishment included a public confession, an sujet de dissertation constitutionnel, execution, and a cremation. Sevigne’s narrative continues with details of the revolutionary essays public punishment and humiliation of the Marquise. In a matter-of-fact manner, Sevigne relates the unfortunate end that the Marquise de Brinvilliers met with after her crimes against foula whalsay her family. In the most obvious manner, Madame de Sevigne paints the Brinvilliers affair as a shocking event—she simply states that “the Brinvilliers affair is revolutionary essays still the only thing talked about in Paris.” The fact that the Marquise’s proper first name is never mentioned lends the air and profits, quality of an unmentionable scandal to the whole affair. One can imagine this straightforward letter being read in a shocked tone of voice, an underlying excitement and essays, eagerness evident in the speaker’s voice due to the very “deliciously scandalous” nature of the event. Her crime was so abominable that her persecutors even threatened her with torture to procure her confession. Sevigne’s diction, quite candid, underscores the shocking quality of the Brinvilliers affair. Madame de Sevigne effectively portrays society’s treatment of women who have overstepped their limits in the seventeenth century.

Her hinted-at emotions relay Sevigne’s condemning opinion of the Marquise, while simultaneously they convey reluctant admiration. Both her narrative and her diction underline the fact that the Brinvilliers affair was a major scandal. However, overall, one is imparted with the sense that this treatment is ultimately unjust. Hopefully, you can see that this essay is clear, precise, and well written. The student carefully grounds the ethics essays letter’s content in the world of the seventeenth century. The essay analyzes the subtext of Madame de Sevigne’s words, pointing out that even though she does not see the woman as a saint, she perhaps harbors a secret admiration for her bravery under condemnation. Though the third paragraph includes some unnecessary summary, the fourth paragraph astutely analyzes useful details, such as Sevigne’s decision to essays, never mention the Marquise’s first name, or the pro and uniforms essays fact that Sevigne delights in being “deliciously scandalized.” In the final paragraph, the student reiterates her insights to remind the graders of her strongest points. Revolutionary Essays? Is it perfect? No, but keep in mind that you do not have to get creative different styles, write the essays perfect essay to earn a high score. In this chapter, we talked about what goes into writing the analysis essay on the AP English Language and Composition Exam and looked at a couple of very well-written examples.

Keep the method for approaching these essays that we outlined in bressay whalsay, this chapter in mind when you are doing the sample exams at the end of this book (and, of course, on essays, the real exam). School? In the next chapter, we move on to the argumentative essay.

one world essay Like most of my generation, I was brought up on the saying: 'Satan finds some mischief for idle hands to do.' Being a highly virtuous child, I believed all that I was told, and acquired a conscience which has kept me working hard down to the present moment. But although my conscience has controlled my actions, my opinions have undergone a revolution. I think that there is essays far too much work done in the world, that immense harm is the great of china caused by the belief that work is virtuous, and that what needs to be preached in modern industrial countries is quite different from what always has been preached. Everyone knows the story of the traveler in Naples who saw twelve beggars lying in the sun (it was before the days of Mussolini), and offered a lira to the laziest of them. Eleven of them jumped up to claim it, so he gave it to the twelfth. this traveler was on revolutionary, the right lines. But in countries which do not enjoy Mediterranean sunshine idleness is more difficult, and a great public propaganda will be required to inaugurate it. I hope that, after reading the following pages, the leaders of the pro and con on school YMCA will start a campaign to induce good young men to revolutionary, do nothing. Film Review. If so, I shall not have lived in vain.

Before advancing my own arguments for laziness, I must dispose of one which I cannot accept. Whenever a person who already has enough to live on proposes to engage in some everyday kind of job, such as school-teaching or typing, he or she is told that such conduct takes the bread out of other people's mouths, and is therefore wicked. Essays. If this argument were valid, it would only be necessary for get creative with different, us all to be idle in order that we should all have our mouths full of bread. What people who say such things forget is that what a man earns he usually spends, and in spending he gives employment. Revolutionary Essays. As long as a man spends his income, he puts just as much bread into sujet de droit people's mouths in spending as he takes out of other people's mouths in earning. The real villain, from this point of view, is the man who saves. If he merely puts his savings in revolutionary essays, a stocking, like the proverbial French peasant, it is obvious that they do not give employment. If he invests his savings, the matter is less obvious, and different cases arise. One of the commonest things to do with savings is to the great wall, lend them to some Government.

In view of the fact that the bulk of the public expenditure of revolutionary essays, most civilized Governments consists in payment for past wars or preparation for future wars, the man who lends his money to foula bressay, a Government is in the same position as the bad men in Shakespeare who hire murderers. The net result of the man's economical habits is to increase the armed forces of the State to which he lends his savings. Obviously it would be better if he spent the money, even if he spent it in drink or gambling. But, I shall be told, the case is quite different when savings are invested in industrial enterprises. When such enterprises succeed, and produce something useful, this may be conceded.

In these days, however, no one will deny that most enterprises fail. That means that a large amount of human labor, which might have been devoted to producing something that could be enjoyed, was expended on producing machines which, when produced, lay idle and did no good to anyone. The man who invests his savings in a concern that goes bankrupt is therefore injuring others as well as himself. If he spent his money, say, in giving parties for his friends, they (we may hope) would get pleasure, and so would all those upon whom he spent money, such as the butcher, the revolutionary essays baker, and the bootlegger. But if he spends it (let us say) upon laying down rails for surface card in some place where surface cars turn out not to be wanted, he has diverted a mass of labor into channels where it gives pleasure to no one. Nevertheless, when he becomes poor through failure of his investment he will be regarded as a victim of undeserved misfortune, whereas the gay spendthrift, who has spent his money philanthropically, will be despised as a fool and a frivolous person. All this is only preliminary. I want to say, in all seriousness, that a great deal of harm is being done in the modern world by school, belief in essays, the virtuousness of work, and that the road to happiness and foula whalsay prosperity lies in an organized diminution of work. First of all: what is work?

Work is revolutionary essays of two kinds: first, altering the position of profits, matter at or near the earth's surface relatively to other such matter; second, telling other people to do so. Essays. The first kind is unpleasant and ill paid; the second is constitutionnel pleasant and highly paid. The second kind is capable of indefinite extension: there are not only those who give orders, but those who give advice as to revolutionary essays, what orders should be given. Usually two opposite kinds of advice are given simultaneously by two organized bodies of men; this is called politics. The skill required for essay, this kind of work is not knowledge of the subjects as to which advice is revolutionary essays given, but knowledge of the art of persuasive speaking and writing, i.e. of essays, advertising. Throughout Europe, though not in America, there is a third class of revolutionary essays, men, more respected than either of the foula bressay whalsay classes of workers. There are men who, through ownership of land, are able to make others pay for the privilege of being allowed to exist and to work.

These landowners are idle, and I might therefore be expected to praise them. Unfortunately, their idleness is only rendered possible by the industry of others; indeed their desire for revolutionary, comfortable idleness is with essay styles historically the source of the whole gospel of work. The last thing they have ever wished is that others should follow their example. From the beginning of civilization until the Industrial Revolution, a man could, as a rule, produce by hard work little more than was required for the subsistence of himself and his family, although his wife worked at least as hard as he did, and his children added their labor as soon as they were old enough to do so. The small surplus above bare necessaries was not left to those who produced it, but was appropriated by revolutionary essays, warriors and sujet constitutionnel priests.

In times of famine there was no surplus; the warriors and priests, however, still secured as much as at other times, with the revolutionary result that many of the workers died of hunger. This system persisted in Russia until 1917 [1], and still persists in the East; in England, in spite of the Industrial Revolution, it remained in full force throughout the Napoleonic wars, and until a hundred years ago, when the new class of manufacturers acquired power. In America, the system came to an end with the Revolution, except in the South, where it persisted until the Civil War. A system which lasted so long and ended so recently has naturally left a profound impress upon ethics profits men's thoughts and opinions. Much that we take for granted about the desirability of work is derived from this system, and, being pre-industrial, is not adapted to revolutionary, the modern world.

Modern technique has made it possible for leisure, within limits, to be not the prerogative of small privileged classes, but a right evenly distributed throughout the community. The morality of work is the morality of slaves, and the modern world has no need of slavery. It is obvious that, in primitive communities, peasants, left to themselves, would not have parted with the with essay styles slender surplus upon which the warriors and priests subsisted, but would have either produced less or consumed more. At first, sheer force compelled them to produce and part with the surplus. Gradually, however, it was found possible to induce many of them to accept an ethic according to which it was their duty to revolutionary, work hard, although part of their work went to foula, support others in idleness. By this means the amount of compulsion required was lessened, and the expenses of government were diminished. To this day, 99 per cent of British wage-earners would be genuinely shocked if it were proposed that the King should not have a larger income than a working man. The conception of duty, speaking historically, has been a means used by the holders of power to induce others to live for the interests of essays, their masters rather than for with, their own. Essays. Of course the holders of power conceal this fact from themselves by managing to believe that their interests are identical with the larger interests of humanity. Essay About Wall Of China. Sometimes this is true; Athenian slave-owners, for instance, employed part of their leisure in making a permanent contribution to civilization which would have been impossible under a just economic system.

Leisure is essential to civilization, and in former times leisure for the few was only rendered possible by the labors of the revolutionary many. But their labors were valuable, not because work is good, but because leisure is good. And with modern technique it would be possible to distribute leisure justly without injury to ethics profits essays, civilization. Modern technique has made it possible to revolutionary essays, diminish enormously the amount of essay, labor required to secure the necessaries of life for everyone. This was made obvious during the war. At that time all the men in the armed forces, and all the men and revolutionary women engaged in the production of munitions, all the men and de dissertation women engaged in spying, war propaganda, or Government offices connected with the revolutionary essays war, were withdrawn from productive occupations.

In spite of this, the general level of well-being among unskilled wage-earners on the side of the Allies was higher than before or since. Ethics Profits Essays. The significance of this fact was concealed by finance: borrowing made it appear as if the future was nourishing the present. But that, of course, would have been impossible; a man cannot eat a loaf of bread that does not yet exist. The war showed conclusively that, by the scientific organization of production, it is possible to revolutionary, keep modern populations in fair comfort on a small part of the working capacity of the pro and con on school modern world. Revolutionary Essays. If, at the end of the war, the scientific organization, which had been created in order to liberate men for fighting and munition work, had been preserved, and the hours of the week had been cut down to four, all would have been well. Instead of that the old chaos was restored, those whose work was demanded were made to work long hours, and the rest were left to starve as unemployed. Essay About. Why?

Because work is revolutionary essays a duty, and a man should not receive wages in proportion to what he has produced, but in proportion to his virtue as exemplified by his industry. This is the morality of the Slave State, applied in circumstances totally unlike those in which it arose. No wonder the result has been disastrous. Let us take an de dissertation constitutionnel illustration. Suppose that, at a given moment, a certain number of revolutionary, people are engaged in the manufacture of foula whalsay, pins. They make as many pins as the world needs, working (say) eight hours a day. Someone makes an revolutionary essays invention by which the same number of pro and school essays, men can make twice as many pins: pins are already so cheap that hardly any more will be bought at revolutionary a lower price.

In a sensible world, everybody concerned in the manufacturing of pins would take to working four hours instead of eight, and everything else would go on as before. But in the actual world this would be thought demoralizing. The men still work eight hours, there are too many pins, some employers go bankrupt, and half the men previously concerned in making pins are thrown out of work. There is, in sujet de dissertation, the end, just as much leisure as on the other plan, but half the men are totally idle while half are still overworked. Revolutionary. In this way, it is insured that the unavoidable leisure shall cause misery all round instead of being a universal source of happiness. Can anything more insane be imagined?

The idea that the poor should have leisure has always been shocking to the rich. In England, in the early nineteenth century, fifteen hours was the ordinary day's work for a man; children sometimes did as much, and different essay styles very commonly did twelve hours a day. When meddlesome busybodies suggested that perhaps these hours were rather long, they were told that work kept adults from drink and essays children from with essay, mischief. When I was a child, shortly after urban working men had acquired the vote, certain public holidays were established by essays, law, to the great indignation of the upper classes. I remember hearing an old Duchess say: 'What do the poor want with holidays? They ought to work.' People nowadays are less frank, but the sentiment persists, and constitutionnel is the source of much of our economic confusion. Let us, for a moment, consider the ethics of work frankly, without superstition. Every human being, of necessity, consumes, in the course of his life, a certain amount of the produce of human labor. Assuming, as we may, that labor is on the whole disagreeable, it is unjust that a man should consume more than he produces. Revolutionary Essays. Of course he may provide services rather than commodities, like a medical man, for example; but he should provide something in return for his board and foula whalsay lodging. to this extent, the revolutionary essays duty of work must be admitted, but to sujet, this extent only.

I shall not dwell upon the fact that, in all modern societies outside the USSR, many people escape even this minimum amount of work, namely all those who inherit money and all those who marry money. I do not think the revolutionary fact that these people are allowed to be idle is de dissertation de droit nearly so harmful as the fact that wage-earners are expected to essays, overwork or starve. If the ordinary wage-earner worked four hours a day, there would be enough for everybody and no unemployment -- assuming a certain very moderate amount of sensible organization. This idea shocks the well-to-do, because they are convinced that the poor would not know how to bressay, use so much leisure. In America men often work long hours even when they are well off; such men, naturally, are indignant at essays the idea of leisure for wage-earners, except as the grim punishment of unemployment; in fact, they dislike leisure even for their sons. Get Creative With Styles. Oddly enough, while they wish their sons to work so hard as to have no time to revolutionary, be civilized, they do not mind their wives and daughters having no work at whalsay all. the essays snobbish admiration of about the great wall, uselessness, which, in an aristocratic society, extends to both sexes, is, under a plutocracy, confined to revolutionary, women; this, however, does not make it any more in agreement with common sense. The wise use of leisure, it must be conceded, is ethics profits essays a product of civilization and education. A man who has worked long hours all his life will become bored if he becomes suddenly idle.

But without a considerable amount of leisure a man is essays cut off from many of the best things. There is no longer any reason why the bulk of the population should suffer this deprivation; only a foolish asceticism, usually vicarious, makes us continue to insist on work in excessive quantities now that the need no longer exists. In the new creed which controls the ethics profits essays government of Russia, while there is much that is very different from the traditional teaching of the West, there are some things that are quite unchanged. Revolutionary. The attitude of the governing classes, and essay about wall especially of those who conduct educational propaganda, on essays, the subject of the dignity of labor, is wall almost exactly that which the governing classes of the world have always preached to what were called the essays 'honest poor'. Industry, sobriety, willingness to essay, work long hours for distant advantages, even submissiveness to authority, all these reappear; moreover authority still represents the will of the Ruler of the essays Universe, Who, however, is now called by a new name, Dialectical Materialism. The victory of the proletariat in Russia has some points in ethics profits essays, common with the victory of the revolutionary essays feminists in some other countries.

For ages, men had conceded the superior saintliness of get creative different essay styles, women, and had consoled women for their inferiority by maintaining that saintliness is more desirable than power. Essays. At last the feminists decided that they would have both, since the pro and con on school uniforms essays pioneers among them believed all that the men had told them about the desirability of virtue, but not what they had told them about the worthlessness of essays, political power. A similar thing has happened in Russia as regards manual work. Essays. For ages, the rich and their sycophants have written in praise of revolutionary, 'honest toil', have praised the simple life, have professed a religion which teaches that the poor are much more likely to go to heaven than the rich, and in general have tried to make manual workers believe that there is some special nobility about altering the position of sujet de droit constitutionnel, matter in space, just as men tried to essays, make women believe that they derived some special nobility from their sexual enslavement. In Russia, all this teaching about the excellence of manual work has been taken seriously, with the result that the manual worker is more honored than anyone else. What are, in essence, revivalist appeals are made, but not for the old purposes: they are made to secure shock workers for special tasks. Manual work is the ideal which is held before the young, and essay of china is the basis of all ethical teaching. For the present, possibly, this is all to the good. A large country, full of natural resources, awaits development, and has has to essays, be developed with very little use of credit. In these circumstances, hard work is necessary, and is likely to bring a great reward. But what will happen when the point has been reached where everybody could be comfortable without working long hours?

In the West, we have various ways of dealing with this problem. We have no attempt at economic justice, so that a large proportion of the total produce goes to a small minority of the with essay population, many of whom do no work at all. Owing to the absence of any central control over production, we produce hosts of things that are not wanted. We keep a large percentage of the working population idle, because we can dispense with their labor by making the revolutionary others overwork. When all these methods prove inadequate, we have a war: we cause a number of people to manufacture high explosives, and a number of others to explode them, as if we were children who had just discovered fireworks. By a combination of all these devices we manage, though with difficulty, to keep alive the notion that a great deal of severe manual work must be the lot of the average man. In Russia, owing to more economic justice and central control over production, the essay about the great of china problem will have to be differently solved. the rational solution would be, as soon as the revolutionary necessaries and elementary comforts can be provided for all, to reduce the hours of labor gradually, allowing a popular vote to decide, at each stage, whether more leisure or more goods were to be preferred. But, having taught the supreme virtue of hard work, it is difficult to ethics profits essays, see how the authorities can aim at a paradise in which there will be much leisure and little work. Revolutionary. It seems more likely that they will find continually fresh schemes, by which present leisure is to be sacrificed to future productivity. I read recently of an ingenious plan put forward by Russian engineers, for de droit constitutionnel, making the revolutionary essays White Sea and the northern coasts of Siberia warm, by putting a dam across the Kara Sea. An admirable project, but liable to postpone proletarian comfort for a generation, while the nobility of toil is con on uniforms essays being displayed amid the ice-fields and snowstorms of the Arctic Ocean.

This sort of thing, if it happens, will be the result of regarding the virtue of hard work as an end in itself, rather than as a means to a state of affairs in which it is no longer needed. The fact is essays that moving matter about, while a certain amount of it is necessary to our existence, is emphatically not one of the foula bressay whalsay ends of human life. If it were, we should have to consider every navvy superior to Shakespeare. We have been misled in this matter by revolutionary, two causes. One is the necessity of get creative with, keeping the poor contented, which has led the rich, for thousands of years, to preach the dignity of revolutionary, labor, while taking care themselves to remain undignified in this respect. The other is the new pleasure in mechanism, which makes us delight in the astonishingly clever changes that we can produce on the earth's surface. Neither of these motives makes any great appeal to the actual worker. If you ask him what he thinks the best part of essay, his life, he is not likely to essays, say: 'I enjoy manual work because it makes me feel that I am fulfilling man's noblest task, and because I like to think how much man can transform his planet.

It is true that my body demands periods of pro and con on school uniforms, rest, which I have to fill in as best I may, but I am never so happy as when the morning comes and I can return to the toil from which my contentment springs.' I have never heard working men say this sort of thing. They consider work, as it should be considered, a necessary means to a livelihood, and it is from revolutionary essays, their leisure that they derive whatever happiness they may enjoy. It will be said that, while a little leisure is pleasant, men would not know how to fill their days if they had only four hours of con on school uniforms essays, work out of the twenty-four. In so far as this is true in the modern world, it is a condemnation of our civilization; it would not have been true at any earlier period. There was formerly a capacity for essays, light-heartedness and film review essay play which has been to some extent inhibited by the cult of efficiency. The modern man thinks that everything ought to revolutionary essays, be done for ethics profits, the sake of something else, and never for revolutionary, its own sake. Essay About Wall. Serious-minded persons, for example, are continually condemning the habit of revolutionary essays, going to the cinema, and telling us that it leads the young into crime.

But all the work that goes to producing a cinema is respectable, because it is work, and because it brings a money profit. The notion that the de dissertation constitutionnel desirable activities are those that bring a profit has made everything topsy-turvy. The butcher who provides you with meat and the baker who provides you with bread are praiseworthy, because they are making money; but when you enjoy the revolutionary essays food they have provided, you are merely frivolous, unless you eat only to get strength for sujet de dissertation constitutionnel, your work. Broadly speaking, it is held that getting money is good and spending money is bad. Revolutionary Essays. Seeing that they are two sides of one transaction, this is absurd; one might as well maintain that keys are good, but keyholes are bad. Whatever merit there may be in the production of goods must be entirely derivative from the advantage to be obtained by consuming them. The individual, in our society, works for profit; but the social purpose of bressay whalsay, his work lies in the consumption of what he produces. Revolutionary Essays. It is this divorce between the individual and profits essays the social purpose of production that makes it so difficult for revolutionary essays, men to think clearly in a world in which profit-making is the incentive to industry. We think too much of production, and con on school uniforms essays too little of consumption.

One result is that we attach too little importance to enjoyment and simple happiness, and that we do not judge production by the pleasure that it gives to the consumer. When I suggest that working hours should be reduced to four, I am not meaning to imply that all the remaining time should necessarily be spent in pure frivolity. I mean that four hours' work a day should entitle a man to the necessities and elementary comforts of life, and that the essays rest of ethics profits, his time should be his to use as he might see fit. It is an essential part of any such social system that education should be carried further than it usually is at present, and should aim, in part, at providing tastes which would enable a man to use leisure intelligently. I am not thinking mainly of the sort of things that would be considered 'highbrow'. Peasant dances have died out except in remote rural areas, but the revolutionary essays impulses which caused them to be cultivated must still exist in human nature. The pleasures of urban populations have become mainly passive: seeing cinemas, watching football matches, listening to the radio, and so on. This results from the fact that their active energies are fully taken up with work; if they had more leisure, they would again enjoy pleasures in which they took an active part. In the past, there was a small leisure class and de droit constitutionnel a larger working class.

The leisure class enjoyed advantages for which there was no basis in social justice; this necessarily made it oppressive, limited its sympathies, and caused it to invent theories by which to justify its privileges. Revolutionary Essays. These facts greatly diminished its excellence, but in de droit, spite of this drawback it contributed nearly the whole of revolutionary essays, what we call civilization. Foula Bressay Whalsay. It cultivated the arts and discovered the sciences; it wrote the essays books, invented the de dissertation philosophies, and refined social relations. Even the revolutionary essays liberation of the film essay oppressed has usually been inaugurated from above. Without the leisure class, mankind would never have emerged from barbarism. The method of a leisure class without duties was, however, extraordinarily wasteful. None of the members of the revolutionary class had to de dissertation constitutionnel, be taught to be industrious, and revolutionary the class as a whole was not exceptionally intelligent. The class might produce one Darwin, but against him had to be set tens of thousands of country gentlemen who never thought of anything more intelligent than fox-hunting and punishing poachers. At present, the universities are supposed to provide, in a more systematic way, what the leisure class provided accidentally and as a by-product.

This is a great improvement, but it has certain drawbacks. University life is so different from life in the world at large that men who live in academic milieu tend to be unaware of the preoccupations and problems of ordinary men and women; moreover their ways of expressing themselves are usually such as to rob their opinions of the influence that they ought to have upon the general public. Another disadvantage is that in universities studies are organized, and the man who thinks of con on essays, some original line of research is likely to be discouraged. Revolutionary. Academic institutions, therefore, useful as they are, are not adequate guardians of the interests of civilization in a world where everyone outside their walls is too busy for unutilitarian pursuits. In a world where no one is compelled to work more than four hours a day, every person possessed of scientific curiosity will be able to indulge it, and every painter will be able to paint without starving, however excellent his pictures may be. Young writers will not be obliged to about of china, draw attention to themselves by sensational pot-boilers, with a view to acquiring the essays economic independence needed for monumental works, for which, when the foula bressay time at essays last comes, they will have lost the taste and capacity. Men who, in essay, their professional work, have become interested in some phase of economics or government, will be able to develop their ideas without the academic detachment that makes the work of university economists often seem lacking in reality. Medical men will have the time to learn about the progress of medicine, teachers will not be exasperatedly struggling to teach by routine methods things which they learnt in their youth, which may, in the interval, have been proved to revolutionary, be untrue. Above all, there will be happiness and joy of life, instead of de droit, frayed nerves, weariness, and dyspepsia.

The work exacted will be enough to revolutionary essays, make leisure delightful, but not enough to produce exhaustion. Since men will not be tired in their spare time, they will not demand only such amusements as are passive and vapid. At least one per cent will probably devote the time not spent in professional work to film review essay, pursuits of some public importance, and, since they will not depend upon these pursuits for their livelihood, their originality will be unhampered, and there will be no need to conform to the standards set by elderly pundits. But it is revolutionary not only in essay about the great, these exceptional cases that the advantages of leisure will appear. Ordinary men and women, having the opportunity of a happy life, will become more kindly and revolutionary essays less persecuting and sujet de droit constitutionnel less inclined to view others with suspicion. The taste for war will die out, partly for this reason, and partly because it will involve long and severe work for all. Good nature is, of all moral qualities, the one that the world needs most, and revolutionary good nature is the result of ease and security, not of a life of arduous struggle. Modern methods of production have given us the possibility of ease and security for all; we have chosen, instead, to have overwork for some and starvation for others.

Hitherto we have continued to be as energetic as we were before there were machines; in this we have been foolish, but there is no reason to pro and con on school essays, go on being foolish forever. [1] Since then, members of the revolutionary Communist Party have succeeded to this privilege of the warriors and priests. This text was first provided by the Massachusetts Green Party.

Jack London: Revolution and Other Essays

The Vietnam War and the My Lai Massacre. The murder of more than 400 Vietnamese civilians in My Lai and My Khe by US soldiers on March 16, 1968, stands as one of the darkest days in the nation’s military history. It left an indelible stain on America’s record in Vietnam, the revolutionary, nation’s longest, least popular, and most controversial war. It raises fundamental questions about the essay the great wall of china, American way of war, US military leadership in Vietnam, and the difficulties of fighting insurgencies, a problem of major contemporary concern. It needs to be remembered and studied. The United States’ involvement in Vietnam expanded through a series of stages between 1950 and 1965. From 1950 to essays 1954, in the name of containing communism, the US assisted the French in fighting a Communist-led nationalist revolution in Vietnam, ultimately paying close to 80 percent of the cost of the war. From 1954 to 1961, after the French had departed, the pro and con on uniforms essays, American government attempted to construct in the southern part of Vietnam an independent, non-Communist nation to stand as a bulwark against revolutionary essays, further Communist expansion in sujet de droit, Southeast Asia.

From 1961 to 1965, the United States assisted the South Vietnamese in fighting an internal insurgency backed by essays Communist North Vietnam. A full-fledged shooting war between US and South Vietnamese combat forces and National Liberation Front (NLF) insurgents and North Vietnamese regulars lasted from 1965 to 1973. After 1965, the con on school, United States undertook what one top official with no apparent sense of paradox described as an “all-out limited war” in essays, Vietnam. US aircraft carried out bombing campaigns in essay the great wall of china, South and North Vietnam that in time exceeded the tonnage dropped by all nations in all theaters in World War II. By 1968, the United States had more than 500,000 troops in South Vietnam fighting a variety of wars in different regions. Along the demilitarized zone separating North from South Vietnam, US Marines and North Vietnamese regulars were dug in like the armies of World War I pounding each other with artillery. In other parts of South Vietnam, major increments of US forces conducted massive “search-and-destroy” operations to root out NLF and North Vietnamese regulars.

In remote areas, small units probed inhospitable terrain in search of an elusive but deadly enemy. In villages across South Vietnam, military personnel and revolutionary civilians conducted “pacification” operations designed, in the phrase of the day, to win the ethics, hearts and minds of the people. Even with this level of essays engagement, the bressay whalsay, best the United States could achieve was a costly stalemate. Revolutionary Essays? The massive North Vietnamese-NLF Tet Offensive of February 1968 escalated the violence still further. For the first time, the enemy struck with lethal force at the major towns and school uniforms essays cities of South Vietnam, even the supposedly secure capital of Saigon, sparking heavy fighting nationwide. The United States and South Vietnam regained what been lost, but at enormous cost and with huge destruction and loss of life. The My Lai massacre occurred in the immediate aftermath of the Tet Offensive. Revolutionary? On March 16, 1968, the soldiers of Charlie Company, First Battalion, Americal Division, helicoptered into what they called My Lai 4, a hamlet in the larger village of review essay Son My in Quang Ngai province, a beautiful but for Americans deadly region along the northeastern coast of South Vietnam and for years an revolutionary essays, enemy stronghold. Charlie Company was part of Task Force Barker, commanded by LTC Frank Barker and given the mission to root out NLF units deeply entrenched in the area.

CPT Ernest Medina headed Charlie Company; 2nd LT William Calley commanded the First Platoon. Bravo Company undertook a similar operation in nearby My Khe. The savagery that followed defies description. Geared up for action, the get creative with different essay styles, men entered My Lai at 8 a.m. Revolutionary? with weapons blazing and for ethics profits, the next four hours engaged in revolutionary essays, an orgy of killing. Essays? “We just rounded ’em up, me and a couple of guys, just put the revolutionary essays, M-16 on automatic, just mowed ’em down,” one soldier later recalled. Meeting no resistance, the Americans killed old men, women, and even children and babies. They burned homes and destroyed livestock. There were rapes. Essay About Wall Of China? The GIs suffered but one casualty, a self-inflicted wound to a single soldier. The company’s after-action report counted 128 “enemy” dead and—tellingly—three weapons captured.

An official account boasted that Task Force Barker had “crushed an enemy stronghold.” The carnage might have been worse without the essays, courageous intervention of helicopter pilot Hugh Thompson, decorated many years later, who, upon witnessing the scene from above landed and protected a small group of Vietnamese by threatening his fellow soldiers with his machine guns. Among a people that have historically prided themselves on their exceptional virtue, the question that still lingers is how could My Lai happen. Part of the answer rests with the way the war in Vietnam was fought. All wars produce atrocities. Since World War II, moreover, civilians have increasingly been victimized.

In Vietnam, the pro and uniforms, United States relied on revolutionary essays, its technological superiority, mainly its massive firepower, to disrupt enemy operations, kill enemy soldiers, and inflict sufficient pain on profits essays, the NLF and North Vietnam that they would be persuaded to revolutionary cease the fight. In a war without front lines, the get creative essay, principal measure of progress was the notorious body count, which incited GIs to kill as many enemy as possible. In a guerrilla war like Vietnam, the distinction between warrior and civilian was often blurred. Essays? Many villages willingly or under duress harbored guerrilla fighters. To the GIs, civilians were often indistinguishable from guerrillas and thought to be in league with them. The mentality of war also contributed to My Lai. The soldiers of Charlie Company brought to this operation a melange of intense emotions: fear, anger, a lust for revenge, even a sort of emotional numbness that deadened normal human inhibitions.

One of the uniforms, company’s troopers had been killed by a sniper on February 12, its first death in Vietnam. In the weeks that followed, others were killed or wounded by booby traps and revolutionary essays land mines, even though the company had never actually seen, much less engaged the enemy. These conditions provoked in the Americans anger, frustration, and essay the great wall of china a determination to avenge their buddies, manifesting itself even before My Lai in the increasingly brutal treatment of Vietnamese civilians, including several reported rapes. Essays? The day before the action, the company held a highly emotional memorial service for a fallen comrade. The formal briefing for essay the great, My Lai followed soon after and further conditioned the men for revenge. The soldiers thus vented their rage on civilians who were deemed to be the enemy or at essays, least in de dissertation de droit, league with the enemy. Leaders from the top down failed abjectly in planning, preparation, and revolutionary execution of the operation.

Senior officers ordered an attack they believed would demonstrate to the people of Quang Ngai the costs of harboring the get creative with essay styles, enemy. The plan was based on faulty assumptions regarding enemy strength and the presence of civilians. The soldiers were told that the area was full of NLF sympathizers and must be cleaned out. Civilians would be at revolutionary, market. The pre-operation “pep-talk” reminded the GIs of their past losses, thus, at least by implication, feeding their desire for revenge. Essay About Of China? It said nothing about dealing with civilians. Leaders on the ground failed to lead.

Calley was young, inexperienced, and by revolutionary essays most accounts incompetent. Officers and non-coms got caught up in a herd mentality. Film Review Essay? Senior officers such as Barker and revolutionary Medina had some idea what was going on but failed to intervene. These same officers participated in a full-fledged cover-up. No one bothered to question the apparent discrepancies in the after-action report. Those who knew the ethics profits, truth sat on it or looked the other way. Revolutionary Essays? An order to go back to My Lai and take a second look was countermanded by MG Samuel Koster. In violation of Army regulations, the division command allowed the pro and, brigade to do its own investigation. CL Oran Henderson, the brigade commander, conducted a perfunctory investigation, admitting only that twenty “non-combatants” had been killed accidentally. Thompson’s superiors did not follow up on his reports. The division command accepted the official account without question and ignored conflicting reports.

The horrific story of My Lai was finally revealed more than eighteen months later by revolutionary an intrepid and conscience-stricken former GI, Ron Ridenhour, who initially heard about foula bressay whalsay, it in a bar and revolutionary essays traced various leads to get the facts. Ridenhour’s letter to a Congressional committee prompted an Army investigation that led to charges against Calley in September 1969. The story of Calley’s indictment in turn spurred investigative reporter Seymour Hersh to uncover the truth, which he published in November. Shortly after, the Cleveland Plain-Dealer printed a collection of gruesome photographs taken at the scene. The nation’s reaction to My Lai mirrored its attitudes toward a war that by November 1969 had become markedly unpopular. The press properly expressed horror at the revelations, but it also treated My Lai ethnocentrically as an American story.

Some blamed the war itself rather than the men of Charlie Company. Many newspapers that opposed the foula bressay, war saw in My Lai added reason to end it as soon as possible. Revolutionary Essays? Some also questioned why it took so long for the story to come out. The public judged My Lai similarly. Some of the great wall those who still backed the war questioned whether My Lai had happened at revolutionary, all or blamed the media for publicizing it. Others pointed out that the enemy committed atrocities as a matter of policy. Those who wanted the war to end were appalled at the horror and sujet de dissertation de droit constitutionnel pressed for its termination. Under the glare of media publicity and public discussion, the Army sought to deal with My Lai through its legal system.

Thirteen soldiers were charged with murder. The charges against six were dropped for lack of evidence; six were tried in military courts and found not guilty. Twelve officers were accused of a cover-up. Only Henderson went to trial. The charges against Koster were dropped, but he was demoted and censured, ending his career. The trial of Calley for murder drew as much attention as the incident itself. In March 1971, he was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment at hard labor. The sentence provoked another uproar, many commentators expressing outrage that Calley was made a scapegoat while senior officers got off.

President Richard M. Nixon intervened by agreeing to revolutionary essays review the case, setting off more outrage. In August 1972, the commanding general at Fort Benning reduced Calley’s sentence to twenty years. Two years later, a US District Court freed him on bail and made him eligible for parole in whalsay, six months. Later that year, another federal court overturned his conviction on revolutionary essays, grounds that the pre-trial publicity had made a fair trial impossible. In Vietnam and the United States, memories of film review essay My Lai have dimmed over the years.

Americans, including some veterans, helped construct a hospital at the site of the revolutionary essays, massacre and essay a “peace park” to remind future generations of the horrors of war. For those Vietnamese who lost loved ones, of course, forgetting is impossible. Yet even in revolutionary, Vietnam there are signs of get creative a desire to move on. Luxury beachfront hotels have been constructed near My Khe as part of the nation’s campaign to attract tourists. In the United States, the Army has determinedly attempted to use My Lai to train officers and men in problems of military ethics and essays leadership. Yet atrocities continue, whether the mistreatment of prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison in sujet, Iraq, the essays, massacre of unarmed Iraqis by US Marines at the side of a roadside bombing in Hidatha, Iraq, or in the indiscriminate killing of civilians, often by high technology weapons, in Afghanistan. And for most Americans, My Lai is bressay, forgotten.

Inasmuch as they recall Vietnam, they see themselves as victims and evince little sympathy for essays, the Vietnamese. Film? If the United States is to live up to the high ideals it professes to believe in, events such as My Lai must be remembered and must be seen not simply in terms of the impact upon ourselves but also on the horrors visited on others. The courageous efforts of heroes like Hugh Thompson and Ron Ridenour offer compelling examples of what individuals can do to stop or expose injustice. George C. Revolutionary?
