The development of substantive normative positions has proceeded in addition rather than in opposition to the careful articulation of precisely what those concepts logically entail. If these debates have also raged in the social scientific literatures then it is clear that academics in this portion of the philosophy of sport have made their own important contributions, premised on in hieroglyphics, a clear understanding of the potentially diverse conceptualisations of sport. Similarly, in ethics, philosophers of sport have attempted to argue for the aptness of different moral philosophical theories to capture sports#8217; nature and buckhannon the nature of sporting actions therein. In a clear sense, then, philosophy is returning to its ancient promise to bring wisdom to bear on important matters that concern us (in sports) and not merely to the detailed technical analysis of key concepts. The Essays is a decidedly unsystematic work. The text itself is composed of 107 chapters or essays on a wide range of topics, including - to name a few - knowledge, education, love, the body, death, politics, the nature and power of custom, and intermediate papers, the colonization of the New World. There rarely seems to be any explicit connection between one chapter and the next. Moreover, chapter titles are often only tangentially related to their contents.
